History of Calvary Ministries Outreach, Int’l In 1985 Rev. Gene Throop and his family answered the call of God to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Maasai tribe of Kenya, East Africa. Between 1985 and 1987 the Throop’s planted 4 churches. Upon returning to America in late 1987, Calvary Ministries Outreach, Int’l was incorporated in the State of Indiana for the purpose of continuing the work that they had begun. Calvary Ministries is an interdenominational not-for-profit organization dedicated to reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Since that time, Calvary Ministries has assisted in starting over 70 churches in Maasailand. We support pastors, evangelists, have schools in our churches, support the teachers and have financed the education of many pastors. We have seen tens of thousands of people come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. In the mid 1980’s the Lord had given a vision for a Bible College in the bush of Maasailand. Finally, in 1998 construction began. We built a new church, Student Center, Dining hall with kitchen and one dormitory that will sleep 40. Calvary Ministries Bible College opened with its first class of students in January of 2001. The initial class consisted of 35 students from Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan. Hundred’s of young ministers have been graduated . In 1999 Calvary Ministries began short-term medical missions to Kenya with volunteer doctors and nurses from America. The mission was so successful and the need in Maasailand so great that medical work has become a large part of CMO’s ministry. In 2000 we were contacted by The 700 Club’s Operation Blessing and asked to partner with them to conduct a medical mission to the Maasai. During a 2 week period in October, 8,945 people were treated and 981 gave their lives to Jesus. Calvary Ministries continues to assist in providing medical assistance to the Maasai. Praise the Lord! In February of 2005 Brian & Stacy Cloud accepted the call to the mission field and moved to Kenya under CMO. The Cloud’s had been to Kenya on previous mission trips and had developed a love for the Kenyan people and for CMO’s methods of operation. Their immediate responsibilities included evaluating our ministry. In February of 2006 we determined that the need for our involvement in the ministry that we had nourished and supported for over 20 years had come to an end and we proceeded to “pass the mantle” to the Kenyans. We kept Paul Kisoso—our Bible College principal, Daniel Lengesia—our evangelist and church planter and Josephine Wanza—our cook. In 2006 with Brian & Stacy at the helm we began developing new ministries in unreached areas of Maasailand. Paul Kisoso, Director of Education, was among the first of the Maasai to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended Nairobi Pentecostal Bible College in Kenya and continued his education in the US where he received his degree. Paul had been on staff at East Africa School of Theology in Nairobi, was the first African principal of The Nazarene Bible College in Nairobi and helped develop Daystar University in Kenya before joining CMO. Paul’s burden has always been to see a Bible College in the heart of Maasailand. He was the principal of Calvary Ministries Bible College, Int’l, but decided to join us in the development of a school “deep in the heart” of Maasailand. He has developed Calvary Ministries Theological Education by Extension. Since February of 2006 he has started 11 satellites and now has 385 students in some of the most difficult terrain on the earth. He labors 7 days per week and is a man of tremendous God-given vision. Rev. Daniel Lengesia, who translated the first sermon I ever preached in Kenya back in 1984, is our Director of Church Planting & Evangelism. In addition to pastoring the church at Namelok, Daniel has started 5 new churches in the past 2 years. His work is deep in the bush of Maasailand at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro where there are no roads. He rides his motorcycle on elephant trails to move from one fellowship to another. Although the work is extremely difficult, the burden that he has for his people makes it a joy. Early in 2007 we were able to purchase 30 acres of land. The land is 8 miles from the Tanzanian border and overlooks Mt. Kilimanjaro. Our plans are to construct ministry headquarters, housing for our staff and a school of Theology. The first phase of the project will be to build a storage building with living facilities for a night watchman and to drill a well on the property. Phase 2 will be housing for our staff. Phase 3 will be construction of a multi-purpose center which will house our offices and be the first building for Calvary Ministries School of Theology. Our new location will put is in a position to reach the unreached Maasai in Kenya and to begin ministry to the Maasai of Tanzania. God is faithful!! Would you please consider helping us to be faithful by partnering with us? Rev. Gene Throop, President Calvary Ministries Outreach, Int’l
